Little Georgetown
Little Georgetownis a playful public art proposal that transforms East Market Lane into a lively corridor of gathering, exploration, and pause. Conceived as a sequence of small-scale sculptural installations, the project creates moments of activation, entertainment, and relaxation within the urban fabric of Georgetown. The installation acts as a magnet for families, children, restaurant patrons, and shoppers, drawing visitors into the alleyway from the surrounding network of shops and restaurants along M Street NW.

Rather than a single object, Little Georgetown is envisioned as a constellation of sculptural forms that collectively shape an environment for play and social engagement. Each piece is designed to function simultaneously as sculpture, stage, and informal gathering place. Visitors may sit, pause, or interact with the forms, while the ensemble can also support larger community activities such as small performances, fashion shows, pop-up concerts, art walks, or neighborhood gatherings. In this way, the project invites both spontaneous interaction and organized programming, encouraging the alley to become a flexible public living room for the community.

The sculptures are conceptually constructed from durable stainless steel panels with exterior-grade structural framing and finished with a resilient Tnemec coating, ensuring longevity in a heavily used outdoor environment. Their forms draw inspiration from the historic and iconic architecture of Georgetown—its rowhouses, rooflines, and urban rhythms—while translating these references into abstract, contemporary shapes. Through this reinterpretation, the project pays homage to the neighborhood’s embedded history while presenting it through a playful and modern lens.
