In The Meantime
If the latest Market Street activation here in Philly is a testament to anything, it’s that the gap between an empty storefront and a thriving small business is less about capital and more about imagination, empowerment, and taking a leap.
Tune into your local Philadelphia news channels and you’ll surely come across the energy that’s happening at the 900 block of Market East. Several buildings on the block, owned by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and Comcast, were set for demolition but will be temporarily spared this summer. The pause was driven by this summer's major events — i.e., the FIFA World Cup and America's 250th anniversary celebrations, which are expected to bring significant foot traffic into the city — allowing the vacant storefronts to be activated in their place.
The Meantime on Market initiative, a partnership between Meantime / ISA, the City of Philadelphia, Center City District, Fashion District Philadelphia, HBSE, and Comcast, has energized these former vacant storefronts with small businesses, art and exhibition pop-ups, and summer programming.
Given a white shell space and designing with a kit of parts, Meantime outfitted each space with a modular furniture system, allowing for customization without demolition or minimal renovation to meet each tenant needs.
Having had a hand in getting Meantime on Market to the finish line, I’m proud to have collaborated on this project and watching it take shape has been inspiring, energizing, and humbling. I’m looking forward to a continuing relationship with the Meantime team and congratulations to my now-favorite, small businesses!
